My Most Anticipated Movies Of 2024
A new year is upon us, and what better way is there to get excited about anything than to celebrate or look forward to something? I don’t really know what that means. Regardless, 2023 was an excellent year for film, and I’m excited to see what 2024 has in place.
Here are my most anticipated movies of 2024, with a few notable mentions. As always, I’m sure there are quite a few I missed out on, so don’t get too annoyed with me.
Anora
I’m a huge Sean Baker fan—The Florida Project, Red Rocket, Tangerine, etc—and while there isn’t much information about Anora, I’m watching anything Baker puts out in this day and age. The Logline, a film about sex workers in upstate New York and Las Vegas is intriguing enough.
Civil War
While 2022’s Men was much more polarizing than 2018’s Annihilation or 2014’s Ex Machina, I still enjoyed it and noted Garland’s next film, Civil War, at the time. While there’s a lot that could go wrong with a post-apocalyptic film of this magnitude, the trailer is promising.
Drive-Away Dolls
Yes, the Coens are separated in the filmmaking world, but that doesn’t mean we should stop caring about their work. Anything the Coens are involved in is on my list, and this new film from Ethan Coen looks right up my alley.
Dune: Part Two
Dune is everything I could’ve hoped for and more. My father’s been hyping up this series since I was a child, and it’s nice to see the story get such a grand adaptation, though that’s not to throw any shade at David Lynch (I still love you, David). I can’t wait for this second installment in the franchise, and it’ll be intriguing to see if Dune Messiah will get the green light.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Mad Max is back baby! Big Mad Max guy here. I usually am disgusted when franchises drag on too long (cough cough Star Wars), but George Miller somehow manages to carry the same energy from the original on a grander scheme with these newer chapters. I can’t wait!
Kinds of Kindness
I’ve gone on record in a post at some point detailing how and why Yorgos Lanthimos is my favorite contemporary filmmaker. The dry and dark dialogue, paired with his fascinating lens, philosophy, and vision, makes his work so profound and memorable. Reading that he has another film starring Emma Stone possibly coming out this year makes me too jovial.
MaXXXine
While X didn’t blow me away on my initial viewing, Pearl has stuck with me since, and the two together have grown stronger over time. I’m interested in seeing how this trilogy from Ti West concludes, and I’m stoked!
Megalopolis
I remember watching an interview with Francis Ford Coppola detailing a passion project he’s had since the 1980s about an architect who wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster. After selling a significant piece of his wine empire and self-funding a good chunk of the film, it’s finally here, or at least is wrapping up. 2024 release?
Mickey 17
How will Bong Joon-ho follow up from his 2019 masterpiece Parasite? Mickey 17 has everything I love: a Sci-Fi story, a great director and cast, and is related to the teletransportation paradox which has fascinated me since watching 2009’s Moon.
Nosferatu
Robert Eggers has made some fantastic and visionary films since 2015’s The Witch, and his latest, an adaptation of the 1922 German Expressionist film Nosferatu, couldn’t be a better fit for his directing and style.
